502, Wednesday After Classes

Predictably enough, the gore in Titus Andronicus had left Romeo almost completely unable to sleep the night before.

However, he was young and he was resilient, and so he spent much of his free day making up for that deficiency. And if eventually he had company, and that company offered more pleasant diversions than mere sleep, what of it?

He snuggled closer to the girl, sleepily smiling and on the verge of drifting off again.

Yurika giggled and nudged at him with her foot. "Sleepy already?" she teased, trying to hide a yawn of her own. "For shame! Some of us had morning classes today, you know, and didn't get to be a layabout."

"Some of us are good at being layabouts," he said, stretching catlike to rub his foot against hers. "Anyhow, you've nothing better to do now, have you?"

"No more classes today," she agreed, shifting to trail sleepy kisses along his shoulder. "No more classes all week, and I like the weirdness the island came up with today."

"The beer?" he asked, raising his head just enough to eye a (full) can set on the bedside table. "I never want to turn down a free drink."

He wrapped his arms around her. "So there's no reason for us not to stay here, my darling."

She giggled as she snuggled in closer. "You're going to turn me into an absolute hedonist," she yawned. "A complete slug. I'm never getting out of this bed again."

"Perfect," he told her, voice mostly breath against her neck and ears. "It'll be our paradise."

He was almost gone then, and there was every chance he, in fact, would not leave the bed.

After a sleepless night, two early classes, beer, and some 'pleasant diversions', Yurika was also almost gone, completely content to spend her afternoon in a tangle of limbs and blankets.

"Shiawase yo," she breathed, almost completely asleep. "Aishiteru."

One eye cracked open. Was his poor Japanese completely wrong or did she just say -

He was too drowsy and pleased to question it or worry about it, really. "I love you, too."

Even if he woke her now to ask, Yurika might not remember what she had said. Or at least, might not willingly admit to it.

She made a small kittenish-sound of contentment, breathing already evening out into sleep as she tried to wriggle a bit closer. Nice warm boy. She was definately a fan.

Romeo was a fan of the nice warm girl, too, especially when she wasn't criticizing his timing. And if he had questions about what she had just said, he could ask them at a time when he had the brain to deal with the answers.

Wisely, he used his mouth only to kiss her shoulder before dropping off himself. There was world enough and time to say all sorts of things. Later.

Sometime (much) later, Yurika shifted and sighed, still more than half-asleep as she tried to squirm closer to him. She'd somehow managed to loose her section of the blanket, and was now zeroing in on the closest available heat source.

That it happened to be Romeo was simply happy coincidence, and she settled in with a happy sigh to use his shoulder as a pillow.

She had lost it because Romeo was a consummate blanket hog, but he was willing to share. With sleepy care, he rearranged his piece to cover them both.

She'd said something, before they fell asleep. Something that was making him happy. It was ... oh.

"I still love thee," he told her, in a whisper. Just in case she thought that had changed as they slept.

"Nani?" Yurika replied, relaxing against him. "Aa shindo..." With a lazy giggle, she pressed a kiss against his collarbone. "Ano, I didn't catch that, aijin, nā?"

Her ability to maintain a single language obviously deteriorated even further when mostly-unconscious.

"I love you," he repeated, stubborn even as he squirmed pleasurably under the kiss. "And, koibito, I'm not awake enough for Japanese."

He was, at the moment, not entirely aware he had just used Japanese to remind her he didn't speak Japanese well.

The first thing that caught the nascent spark of her awareness was that he was squirming. Quite nicely, too. Humming slightly, she set about scattering more kisses along his neck hoping to inspire similar reactions.

Then the rest of it penetrated her brain, and she paused, resting her forehead against him. "Maybe I'm not awake enough for English," she said, stalling slightly. "Did you think of that?"

He closed his eyes again, awake enough to be aware he was on dangerous ground.

He decided not to care, not as long as she kept kissing him.

"Ah, but I can't remember how to pronounce the one you said," Romeo said, running a hand down her back. "Suki dayo, is that close?"

Yurika suddenly got the sinking suspicion that perhaps her internal thoughts earlier maybe hadn't stayed internal as she drifted off to sleep.

Fine. If he wanted to play this game, she wasn't going to make it easy on him.

"'Aa shindo' sounds nothing like that," she murmured, picking up her trail of kisses. "Aho."

"Not that," he said, withdrawing slightly. It hurt to pull himself away from her kisses, but he could either think or be kissed, and thinking was the more important. "Before we were asleep. You said something I didn't understand and then you said the I love you that isn't suki, the aish one."

He looked down at her, hurt. "You need not call me stupid, you know."

"Silly! It means silly!" she flailed, jerking upright with surprise. "Aho is silly! I promise! I was just teasing you!"

Now that she was waking up, however, the memories from earlier were trickling back slowly. "Shiawase yo?" she breathed, half question and half exclamation, before falling back on the pillow with a groan. "Oh hell."

This was ... completely bewildering, actually, and Romeo was coming much closer to earth. He sat up and started rummaging for his shorts and a shirt.

"Should I assume it was a slip of the tongue?" he asked, stiffly. "You know I mean it, and I will keep meaning it, no matter if you deny all and never say it again."

"It wasn't a slip."

Yurika reached out to grab his wrist. "I just...I didn't realize I said it aloud, okay?"

It took Romeo a moment, but then the smile spread broadly on his face. "You did," he half-laughed. "Softly, and in Japanese, but you did."

He wanted to kiss her, but held back for the moment. "I'll keep it a secret."

Yurika flushed bright red and ducked her head, trying to hide behind her hair. "Yeah, well, don't expect to hear it every day," she grumbled, biting her lip. "It's not something that's said very often, especially not aishiteru. It's a cultural-thing."

"Darling, you told me a long time ago you wouldn't even say it about your family," he reminded her. Though, now that he'd met her father, that made more sense. "You wouldn't be you if you were spouting poetry twice a day."

He squeezed her hand. "Just ... I'm very happy to hear it, even once. All right?"

"If I used that word with my father, it would imply worlds of wrong," she joked, peeking out at him warily. "Don't worry, I'm not going to try and start writing poems or songs or anything, I'm still me. If I start acting like that, check me for one of those gremlin bites."

"But I'll still read those dirty poems to you, though. That was fun."
