withoutverona: (emo on the beach)
Romeo and Dojima had skipped Homecoming this year. He had a paper due, she had work, and it hardly seemed worth the trip when so few of their friends seemed likely to make it. They'd get back to Fandom some other time.

Of course, the Nothing didn't especially care about their travel plans. It dipped its fingers down, brushing them against Verona Beach before whispering away again for now. As it happened, it arrived on a day when Romeo checked in with his cousin.

He got off the phone.... )

Romeo stumbled in from a long, late dinner with some college friends and flopped onto the couch with his eyes closed. The week had been unusually tiring, and the sake and beer with dinner had not helped. He didn't mind his classwork itself, but there were times he'd give his eyeteeth not to be surrounded by business students all of the time.

Of course that was when his phone rang. Romeo glanced at it: Benvolio.

Well, speaking Verona would be a balm to his soul after three hours of Japanese only lightly sprinkled in English. He took the call, though his initial greetings were a bit wary.

Romeo's mood was much improved when he hung up. "I'm to be an uncle," he told Alea. (Okay, technically a cousin once removed, but Romeo saw no reason to quibble over such things. The important part was that Benvolio and Rosaline were having a child.)

The cat ... was not impressed.

[OOC: Open to anybody who wants to talk to him!]

As a rule, Romeo did not notice dates, days, the endless passage of time. He knew Yurika's birthday because it was the Ides of March, his own because it was his, and registered his class and work schedule well enough to show up, mostly more or less on time.

He knew, though, that it had been the middle of July, a year before, when he met and wed Juliet, and it was mid-July again. Another hot day, too, although it found him in a city not his own, on the shores of a stranger sea.

Pondering all of this, he pulled out his long-neglected journal and picked up a pen. He wasn't sure what to write, only that he needed to.

[OOC: Door closed but knockable, and of course open to Teyla. Phone call thread is first chronologically. And, because I am a geek -- intersecting Juliet's canon birthday with Romeo's FH timeframe dictates he met her July 15, 2007. His wedding anniversary would be July 16, she died (and he attempted suicide) July 19. My Shakespearean will be emo this week even by his standards.]

Romeo had all but quit talking as he drew closer and closer to the banquet hall, and his jaw was set at an odd angle, half suffering, half determined. "Thou needst not go with me," he told Yurika as he steered a rented car into the parking lot.

He might have said that about 15 times.

At the party. )

Romeo sat cross-legged on his bed, still dressed in the loose pants and t-shirt he had slept in. His laptop was open in front of him, and he kept toggling between an email he was trying to write to Benvolio ) and sites advertising spring break deals in Miami.

He wasn't sure he would want to stay in the kind of hotel that advertised beer pong as an activity, even if it was only $49 a night.

[OOC: Door closed, post open.]

Romeo knew Benvolio did not actually want to hear from him; he had been told as much, in as few words as his onetime dearest cousin could manage, because Benvolio knew that more words would give Romeo more room to charm him into forgiveness.

Yet with two days of Fandom behind him, Romeo had to reach out to someone who knew him from back home.

Email time! )

The letter sent, most likely to remain unread, Romeo settled back on his bed and stared at the glow-in-the-dark constellations he had arranged on the ceiling above. It was a childish touch, yet one he took a measure of delight in.

[OOC: Linkdroppy, but the door is open.]
